NL Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
June 19th, 2026 by Aubree

Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by most of the top pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to discover anything he could about poker. Phil would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the adverse feedback from others kill his ambition of being one of the best poker players in the world.

He began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning period and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He says that he is learning every day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.

Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
