February 13th, 2023 by Aubree

Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently play against each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
