March 2nd, 2020 by Aubree

Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker player in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn anything he could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental comments from others kill his goal of becoming one of the best poker players in the world.

He started playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning opportunity and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and always strives to improve.

Even though Phil has won some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
