Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
